THE DUST STORY
Mold spores, pollen,
dander (dry skin), dust mites and other fine particles exist
in the air we breathe and are commonly referred to as dust.
Dust is not merely an unsightly problem we would like to remove
from our homes, we have to!
Dust plays an important role in the health of your family. According
to the EPA, "You are 10 times more likely to get sick from the
air inside your home than you are from the air outside your
home."
Think about it! Most of the time we get sick or have an allergic
reaction, we are in large public places. Schools, churches,
bars and restaurants are some of the most common places we catch
"something."
THE DUST MITE
There are 15 different species of dust mites which are found
in 99% of all households. 15,000 can be found in one single
speck of dust. Over 2 million can be found in one double bed.
As a matter of fact, up to 25% of the weight of a 6 year old
pillow consists of stuff that was never there when you purchased
your pillow. The bedroom always has the highest concentration
of dust mites and allergens.
Dust mites live on the scales of skin that are shed by both
humans and animals. The average adult sheds 1.5 grams of skin
per day.
(Enough to feed 1 million dust mites)
Dust mites live for roughly 2 months, but produce over 200 times
their body weight in waste (Feces).
Over time, both dust mites and waste breakdown, become airborne,
and we breathe them.
DUST--THE ALLERGEN TAXI SERVICE
Think of dust as a taxi service. Bacteria, germs and viruses
have no true form of locomotion. However, by attaching themselves
to dust particles they can float wherever the wind blows them.
They then settle in upholstery and carpeting, or are breathed
and removed by some unsuspecting guest or family member.
The more severe the dust problem, the greater the risk of coming
into contact with these illness and allergy causing pollutants.
DISGUSTED???
If you are a bit disgusted by this information, please understand.
We are too! However, the truth can not be avoided, even if you
look the other way.
The stuff we pick up with our vacuums is comprised of mostly
organic material. We know that as soon as organic material dies,
it starts decomposing. We know that this begins even before
the organic material hits your floor. Once on your floor, it
continues to break down. This material is then picked up by
your vacuum.
At this point, your vacuum can do two things. It can retain
the garbage you pick up, or it can blow it back into the air
you breathe.
Many manufacturers have gone to cyclonic filtration, however,
the 2-ply vacuum bag is absolutely the best primary stage of
filtration a vacuum can utilize.
Don't be fooled by fancy ads on TV.
ALL ALLERGY FILTRATION VACUUMS USE BAGS!
IT GETS WORSE!
Many doctors and allergists recommend removing your carpeting,
and replacing it with a bare floor surface. If you want bare
floors, this is a great idea. If you don't want bare floors,
this may not be a good idea.
Bare floors are easier to clean, however allergens move around
easier on a bare floor. If you do not use an allergen vacuum,
and you use a broom or mop, your bare floor is doing more harm,
than good.
Your carpet is the largest filter in your home. Meaning, it
contains a lot of allergen. But is that a bad thing?
The answer is, "NOT REALLY!"
While your carpet contains allergen, it rarely gets airborne.
Picture walking across your bare floor. Pet hair and dust moves
to the side as you walk by. This doesn't happen on your carpet,
does it?
There is a concern regarding the outgassing from new carpeting.
That is a problem, however it goes away quickly after the carpet
is laid, much the same way that "new car" smell does. This process
can be speeded up by the aid of filtration equipment.
We have had great success with allergy clients who have kept
their carpeting and turned the cleaning over to a well designed
vacuum system. Some who used to have monthly injections to treat
their allergies do not even need them anymore.
IF YOUR CARPET IS THE LARGEST FILTER IN YOUR HOME, WHAT ARE YOU
GOING TO USE TO CLEAN THE FILTER?
Now you know why the best thing you can do is eliminate all dust
mops and dust rags and switch to a high filtration vacuum for
all your cleaning needs. It will definitely help keep the bedrooms
cleaner, where most of the dust mites and allergens exist in you
home.
